“Bella!” I screamed. “What’s happening?”

“I don’t know!” she cried back. I could hear the fear in her voice, and it hit me hard. I looked around and saw that everyone else, Joey, Hattie, and Yvette, were all with me. Only Bella was trapped.

“Bella, it’s okay!” I shouted over the fire. “I just need you to come through the flames so we’re on the same side. Your uniform is fireproof, remember?”

I saw her shift behind the wall of fire and start to reach for the fire. “But… It’s going to hurt,” she called.

“I know.” I bit my lip as I watched her profile, keeping my eyes on her. “I know it’s going to hurt. Here.” I gritted my teeth and, without much thinking, shoved my hand through the fire. “Bella.” As I spoke, I cringed from the pain. The metal was lined with fabric so it wasn’t searing against my skin, but I could feel the heat, even through my superhuman Resistance. “It’s okay. Just take my hand and come through. Then we’ll figure this out.”
